Submitting to the VIRGINIA Journal

Submit your paper to the journal by filling out our application. Guidelines for submission can be found below. Submissions for our Spring 2026 Edition are closed, but submissions for Fall 2026 will open in the future.

Only University of Virginia undergraduates or newly-minted graduates are eligible to submit.

  • Topic: A contemporary issue related to foreign affairs

  • Length: Between 8 and 20 pages, preference is given to work closer to 10 pages

  • Essay grade: B+ or higher

  • Additional information: Include a title page, abstract, and brief author bio (150 words max.)

  • Format: Send your essay as a Word document with Chicago, parenthetical, inline citations

Becoming a Staff Writer

Interested in writing shorter pieces for the Journal? We encourage you to apply to become a staff writer! Staff writers are responsible for contributing to the shorter form and opinion sections of the Journal through both writing and revision. Staff writers will write 2-3 (or more!) op-eds over the semester to be published on our website.

BECOMING A STAFF EDITOR

Staff editors are responsible for editing undergraduate research papers that are accepted for publication by the Journal and will also have the opportunity to write 1-2 (or more!) op-eds over the semester that will be published on our website.
